T4A's principles for infrastructure investment include Invest in the Rest, Fix It First, and Safety Over Speed.

OUR PRINCIPLES FOR THE NEXT FEDERAL INVESTMENT IN INFRASTRUCTURE

We're calling on Congress to update the decades-old federal transportation program to prioritize what actually matters to everyday Americans by following three key principles: Safety Over Speed, Fix It First, and Invest in the Rest.

Our transportation system has big problems to solve, like rising emissions, increasing congestion, and an ever-growing number of bridges and roadways in need of repair. For too long, our federal leaders have tried to address these problems by investing in the same old strategies and expecting different results. It's time for that to change. Learn more about our three principles.

New: Invest in the rest

For 60 years, we've invested hundreds of billions of dollars in highways. Our new principle calls on federal leaders to bring the freedom of choice back to our transportation system and expand opportunities to travel by foot, bike, bus, or train.

Fix it first

Despite a jaw-dropping $830 billion backlog for repairing existing highways alone, taxpayer dollars continue to fund costly, ineffective highway expansion projects. Federal funding must make maintenance a priority.

Safety over speed

When it comes to traffic safety, the U.S. is well behind every other developed nation. When our state, local, and federal leaders are investing this much in transportation, it should result in streets that are safe for everyone, no matter how they choose to get around. We must prioritize the safety of everyone over the speed of a view.
