TELL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TO support BIPARTISAN BILL H.R. 6438

Dear Supporter,

The National Brownfields Coalition is pleased to share that, on November 15th, 2023, Representatives Sherrill (NJ-11) and Turner (OH-10) introduced the Brownfields Redevelopment Tax Incentive Reauthorization Act of 2023 in Congress to allow developers to fully deduct their cleanup expenses on contaminated property in the year the costs were incurred. We need your support to urge Congress to pass this important piece of legislation.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

The brownfield tax incentive is an investment. The redevelopment of brownfields generates increased tax revenue for local, state, and federal governments from formerly idle, non-income-producing property. This bipartisan bill will encourage developers and site owners to take on seriously contaminated land by reducing its effective cleanup cost by an estimated ⅓ to ½, depending on the combined income tax bracket. Such projects usher in the economic gains that flow from new capital investments in communities across the country. Further, the brownfields tax incentive treats volunteers the same as polluters in the tax treatment of cleanup costs. Currently, those who caused the pollution or are otherwise liable to conduct a cleanup are able to expense their cleanup costs. Restoring this incentive will again allow volunteers to do the same.
